The January longitude term is +15.76 minutes, larger than the −9-minute-28-second equation-of-time term. Civil noon therefore becomes 12:06:17 solar. In July, daylight time changes the reference meridian; the longitude term turns negative and noon becomes 11:09:43. The direction of the net correction is not a permanent property of the city.

The calculator above does not store a hard-coded “Boston offset.” For every submitted reading it:

America/New_Yorkrules; - loads the production city-center coordinate for GeoNames ID
4930956; - compares Boston’s longitude with the meridian implied by the resolved UTC offset;
- derives the equation of time from the Sun’s apparent position;

The calculation uses the IANA Time Zone Database for historical civil offsets and Astronomy Engine for the Sun-based equation-of-time step. The general astronomical concepts can also be compared with the official NOAA Solar Calculator.
Greater Boston covers multiple municipalities and longitudes. The city-center preset is appropriate for exploration, while a boundary-sensitive birth should use the closest indexed birthplace. A birth certificate or family record may also round the time. When the result is close to a branch boundary, preserve those input limits rather than treating a city-center calculation as more precise than the source record.
