How a BaZi chart is calculated, step by step
A trustworthy chart should be inspectable. This guide separates the calendar calculation, the traditional interpretation rules and the limits of what either layer can establish.
A BaZi chart is calculated by resolving the birth record to its historical civil-time rules, correcting the local clock to true solar time, locating the birth instant against solar-term and day boundaries, and then deriving the Four Pillars, hidden stems, Day Master and Ten Gods.
The complete calculation in one view
BaZi means Eight Characters: four stem-branch pairs derived from the year, month, day and hour of birth. The output looks compact, but reaching it correctly requires more than converting a Gregorian date into Chinese calendar labels.

The first five stages are calendar and astronomy engineering. The later stages encode a traditional interpretive system. Keeping them separate matters: a reproducible chart does not turn a metaphysical interpretation into modern scientific prediction.
Step 1: preserve the birth record before calculating anything
Start with what the record actually says:
- Gregorian birth date;
- recorded local clock time, including minutes when known;
- birthplace, ideally the city and country rather than a timezone abbreviation;
- whether the time is exact, rounded, remembered approximately or unknown.
A timezone abbreviation such as CST is not enough: it can refer to different
regions, and even one city can have different legal offsets across history.
Likewise, 03:00 copied from a family memory may be less certain than it looks.
Pillarwise keeps record quality separate from calculation precision. If the
hour is unknown, stable year/month/day output can still be computed while
hour-dependent conclusions remain unavailable.

Step 2: resolve the historical civil time
The birthplace first resolves to latitude, longitude and an IANA timezone such
as America/Toronto, Europe/London or Asia/Shanghai. That timezone name is
then evaluated at the birth date, not at the current date.
This step handles changes such as:
- daylight saving time beginning or ending;
- wartime or political offset changes;
- regions whose legal time changed during the twentieth century;
- historical local-mean-time fallback where standardized timezone records do not cover the date.
The resolved offset turns the local civil reading into one absolute UTC instant. That instant is necessary for astronomical solar terms. The city coordinates are also retained because two places sharing the same legal timezone do not share the same solar time.
This is a common source of chart disagreement. A calculator that applies Toronto’s present summer offset to a winter birth, for example, starts from a different instant before any BaZi rule is reached.
Step 3: convert clock time to true solar time
Legal clock time is uniform across a timezone. The Sun is not. Local apparent solar time, commonly called true solar time, uses both the place and the date:
True solar time = civil clock time + longitude correction + equation of time
The longitude correction measures how far the birthplace sits east or west of the historical timezone meridian. The equation of time is the date-specific difference between apparent and mean solar time caused by Earth’s axial tilt and non-circular orbit.
Longitude alone is therefore incomplete. So is a fixed table of city offsets: the legal UTC offset and the equation of time can change by date. The true solar time calculator and formula exposes all three values and the corrected timestamp instead of returning only a hidden yes/no decision.
The correction does not automatically change a chart. It matters when the corrected result crosses a two-hour branch boundary, a date boundary or a nearby solar-term instant. A receipt should show that crossing rather than merely announce that true solar time was used.
Step 4: apply the correct boundary to each pillar
The four pillars do not all come from the same shortcut.
Year pillar
In this method the BaZi year changes at Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring, not on January 1 and not at Lunar New Year. Li Chun is an astronomical instant. A birth on the printed Li Chun date still needs its time and timezone compared with the exact transition.
Month pillar
BaZi months are solar months set by twelve principal boundary terms. They do not begin on Gregorian month starts and they are not lunar festival months. The month branch follows the active solar month; the month stem follows from the year stem through a fixed cycle.
Day pillar
The day pillar advances through the sixty stem-branch combinations. Pillarwise uses the resolved local true-solar date and an explicit Zi-hour school setting. The default is documented rather than hidden, because schools can disagree about whether the late Zi interval belongs to the new BaZi day.
Hour pillar
The corrected local solar time selects one of twelve two-hour branches. The hour stem is then derived from the day stem. A different day-boundary rule can therefore change both the day pillar and the hour stem in the 23:00–00:59 interval.

Step 5: assemble the Four Pillars
Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch:

The result is eight visible characters, but the branch characters are not single elements. Each branch contains one to three hidden stems. Those stems are part of the next stage and are essential to roots, support and Ten God relationships.
Worked example: Beijing, 1 June 1992 at 12:00

At longitude 116.4° E, local mean solar time sits about 14 minutes 24 seconds behind the UTC+08:00 reference meridian at 120° E. The equation of time for the fixture adds about 2 minutes 14 seconds, producing true solar time near 11:47:50. That stays inside the Wu hour, 11:00–12:59.
The locked chart fixture produces:

The example is useful because every step is inspectable. The UTC offset comes from the date-specific timezone rule; the solar correction is numerical; the four raw pillars are locked in the golden set. A different gender setting can affect later luck-pillar direction, but it does not change these four natal pillars.
Step 6: expose hidden stems and identify the Day Master
The Day Master is simply the stem of the day pillar. In the worked example the day pillar is 戊申, so the Day Master is 戊, Yang Earth.
The four branches then expose their stored stems:

申 appears twice, but repeated symbols still need context. Primary, middle and residual stems do not all carry identical weight, and the seasonal month branch has a different role from a duplicate elsewhere.

Step 7: derive the Ten Gods from element and polarity
Every visible or hidden stem is compared with the Day Master. There are five possible elemental relationships:
- the same element as the Day Master;
- an element produced by the Day Master;
- an element controlled by the Day Master;
- an element that controls the Day Master;
- an element that produces the Day Master.
Splitting each relationship by same or opposite yin/yang polarity creates ten functional labels: the Ten Gods. They are not deities and they are not ten independent personality scores. They are a relational vocabulary generated from one reference point.
For the Wu Earth example, 壬 Water becomes Indirect Wealth, 乙 Wood becomes Direct Officer, and another 戊 Earth becomes Friend. The complete Ten Gods guide shows the full relationship table and explains why simple counts are not enough.
Step 8: evaluate season, roots, support and drain
A Day Master is not labelled strong or weak by counting how many times its element appears. A deterministic assessment considers at least:
- season: whether the month command supports, drains, controls or is controlled by the Day Master;
- roots: whether supporting stems are anchored in the branches;
- visible support: Resource and Peer relationships that reinforce the reference element;
- output and wealth: relationships through which the Day Master expends or controls energy;
- authority pressure: relationships that control the Day Master;
- combinations and transformations: only when their stated preconditions are met.
Strong and weak are load-and-balance descriptions, not praise and criticism. A strong Day Master may need useful outlets or restraint; a weak one may need support or a narrower load. The same Ten God can therefore read differently in two charts.
The worked fixture is classified as strong by the current locked rule set. That classification is versioned: changing a threshold or rule requires new tests and a rules-version change rather than a silent prose edit.
Step 9: calculate Luck Pillars only after the natal chart is stable
Luck Pillars are ten-year timing frames derived from the natal chart, birth direction rule and distance to the relevant solar-term boundary. The direction and start age are explicit calculated fields. They should not be reverse-fit to known events.
The natal Ten Gods are then re-evaluated as timing stems and branches arrive. This is contextual comparison, not an event promise. Read the Luck Pillars guide after the Day Master and Ten Gods; otherwise timing labels have no stable reference point.
How the calculation is validated
Pillarwise locks the calculation at several levels:
- Deterministic contracts: the resolved birth record, chart and later judgment layers are separate typed outputs.
- Golden fixtures: historical timezone changes, daylight saving time, Li Chun and solar-term boundaries, overseas locations, Zi-hour cases and unknown-time behavior are saved as repeatable cases.
- Separate oracle path: Python oracle scripts rebuild expected boundary and chart outputs outside the production TypeScript path.
- Pinned dependencies: timezone data and local calculation libraries are versioned so a result cannot drift invisibly after deployment.
- Boundary warnings: a result close to an hour, day or solar-term boundary is identified as input-sensitive rather than presented with false certainty.
These controls establish consistency and make regressions visible. They do not claim that BaZi interpretation has been scientifically validated as a way to predict life events.

That distinction is the core methodology. Calculation should be reproducible; interpretation should be rule-governed, source-traced and modest about what it can claim.
A five-minute chart audit
Before reading any long report, verify these fields in order:
- original civil date, time and birthplace;
- resolved IANA timezone and historical UTC offset;
- longitude correction and equation of time;
- corrected solar date and time;
- Li Chun and solar-month boundary status;
- stated Zi-hour day convention;
- four raw pillars;
- Day Master and the Ten God mapping for one visible stem;
- any hour/day/solar-term boundary warning;
- engine, timezone-data and rules versions.
If two systems first diverge at item three, comparing their later personality paragraphs will not solve the calculation disagreement.

Questions
Frequently asked
Use the birth date, the recorded local time when known, and the birthplace. The place resolves coordinates and the historical timezone rule in force on that date; an unknown birth time should remain unknown rather than being silently replaced with noon.
Not in the solar-term method used here. The year pillar changes at Li Chun, and month pillars change at their setting solar terms. Each transition is treated as an astronomical instant, not just a printed calendar date.
They may use different historical timezone data, omit longitude or the equation of time, approximate solar-term boundaries, or apply different Zi-hour day rules. Compare the calculation receipt before comparing the interpretation.
Birthplace is always part of this method. True solar time changes the hour pillar only when the correction crosses a two-hour boundary, and it can affect the day near a date boundary. A birth far from either boundary may keep the same pillars.
It can establish that stated inputs and boundary rules deterministically produce a stated chart. It does not establish that a traditional interpretation predicts events or has a measurable success rate.
The production TypeScript engine is checked against separately implemented oracle scripts and locked golden fixtures covering historical timezone changes, daylight saving time, solar-term boundaries, Zi-hour cases, unknown time and overseas locations.
