Why BaZi calculators give different results
The same birth details can produce different pillars when two tools silently use different clocks, boundaries or school conventions. Compare the calculation before comparing the reading.
Most BaZi calculator disagreements begin in one of six places: historical timezone and DST, longitude, the equation of time, solar-term boundaries, the Zi-hour day rule, or uncertain birth data.

Find the first pillar that changed
Do not compare two long interpretations first. Put the four raw pillars side by side and find the first difference:
- Year or month differs — inspect Li Chun and the exact solar-term instant.
- Day differs — inspect the resolved date, timezone conversion and Zi-hour day rule.
- Only the hour differs — inspect birthplace, historical DST, longitude, equation of time and the final two-hour branch.
- All four pillars match but the reading differs — the calculation agrees; the interpretation rules do not.
That sequence turns “which site should I trust?” into a smaller, testable question.
The six places calculators diverge

The decisive question is not whether a calculator mentions one of these features. It is whether the tool shows the value it actually used.
Worked example: one clock time, two hour branches
Take a hypothetical birth recorded in Toronto on 20 July 2026 at 12:00 local civil time. Toronto was on UTC−04:00 daylight time. At the city-center longitude, the deterministic receipt is:

If a tool maps the uncorrected clock directly, 12:00 falls in the Wu (Horse) hour, 11:00–12:59. After the visible correction, 10:35:59 falls in the Si (Snake) hour, 09:00–10:59. The same recorded input therefore produces a different hour branch under the two stated methods.
The receipt does not ask you to accept a hidden “precision” label. It shows the historical offset, longitude term, solar term and boundary crossing so another implementation can reproduce the decision.
Why year and month pillars can differ
BaZi month boundaries follow solar terms, not Gregorian month starts and not the lunar month used for festival dates. The year boundary is commonly tied to Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring, rather than January 1 or Lunar New Year.
The transition is an instant, not merely a printed date. A birth close to Li Chun or another month-setting solar term needs:
- the correct absolute birth instant;
- the relevant timezone history;
- an astronomical solar-term calculation;
- a stated inclusion rule for an exact boundary.
If two calculators disagree for a birth far from every solar-term boundary, the first useful comparison is their displayed calendar conversion—not the reading written below it.
Why the Day Master can differ
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. When two tools show a different Day Master, they have already assigned different days.
Check:
- whether the original local date was converted through the correct historical timezone;
- whether the corrected solar time crossed midnight;
- whether the tool starts the BaZi day at 23:00 or at 00:00;
- whether a rounded birth time sits inside the disputed interval.

A five-minute comparison procedure
Open both results and record only these fields:

Save screenshots or export the receipt. “The charts look different” is hard to debug; “the two tools first diverge at the historical UTC offset” is reproducible.
What the calculation receipt can prove
The receipt can establish:
- which input and birthplace were used;
- which historical timezone offset applied;
- how longitude and the equation of time changed the clock reading;
- whether a branch, date or solar-term boundary was crossed;
- which explicit convention produced the four pillars;
- whether the same input gives the same output on a repeat run.
It does not establish that an interpretation is comprehensive, that a tendency will occur, or that a metaphysical proposition has been demonstrated. Calculation consistency and interpretation are separate layers.

If the birth time is missing or rounded
An apparently exact 03:00 may have been rounded from a family recollection.
Adding more decimal places to the astronomical correction does not repair an
uncertain source record.
Use three evidence states:
- Known and away from a boundary: compute the hour normally.
- Known but close to a boundary: keep both candidate branches visible until the input is resolved.
- Unknown: calculate the stable year, month and day fields and omit hour-dependent conclusions.

First compare the civil timezone, daylight-saving rule, birthplace longitude, equation-of-time correction and the final solar time. A change across a two-hour boundary produces a different hour branch.
Check whether both tools use astronomical solar-term instants, including Li Chun for the year boundary, rather than January 1, Lunar New Year or an approximate calendar date.
A different Day Master means the day pillar changed. Compare the resolved calendar date, timezone conversion and the stated Zi-hour day-boundary convention before reading any interpretation.
Not automatically. One tool may contain an error, but two tools may also expose different school conventions. A reproducible calculator states the inputs, time correction, boundary rule and resulting pillars.
Treat the hour pillar as conditional. Pillarwise accepts an unknown time and separates stable year/month/day output from conclusions that require the missing hour.
