Why New York clock time and solar time differ
New York uses one legal clock across the Eastern Time Zone, but the Sun follows local longitude. The city center is near 74.006° W, east of the standard UTC−05:00 meridian at 75° W. That longitude difference is small during standard time. During daylight saving time, however, the legal clock advances to UTC−04:00 while the Sun does not, so the longitude term becomes about one hour more negative.
The seasonal equation of time then adds another date-specific adjustment. It reflects Earth’s axial tilt and non-circular orbit. This is why a single fixed “New York solar-time offset” is not reliable.

The winter result remains close to noon because New York is near the Eastern Standard Time reference meridian. The July result is more than an hour behind the daylight-saving clock. These are date-specific examples, not permanent conversion constants.

- interpret the date and time under the historical
America/New_Yorktimezone rules; - compare New York’s longitude with the meridian implied by that UTC offset;
- derive the equation of time from the Sun’s apparent position;
- add both corrections to the civil reading;
- compare the civil and corrected two-hour branches.
On 15 July 2026 at 12:00, the example moves from the Wu branch to the Si branch because the corrected time is 10:57:56. On 15 January 2026 at 12:00, the smaller correction stays within the Wu branch. A change is therefore possible, not automatic.

Coordinate and recorded-time limits
The calculation uses the IANA Time Zone Database for historical civil offsets and Astronomy Engine for the Sun-based equation-of-time step. The general astronomical concepts can also be compared with the official NOAA Solar Calculator.
The preset uses city-center coordinates, not a street address. New York spans enough longitude that an exact birthplace can move solar time by a small number of minutes. Recorded birth times may also be rounded or uncertain.
When a result lies close to a branch boundary, treat both location precision and the recorded minute as input uncertainty. The receipt supports inspection and decision-support; it does not turn uncertain source data into false precision.

No. The size and direction of the final difference are date-dependent. Daylight saving time usually makes the summer gap much larger, while the equation of time changes through the year.
