Annual Luck is the one-year stem-and-branch layer compared with the natal chart and active Luck Pillar. It describes changing emphasis, not a fixed event forecast.
Annual Luck (流年) is the heavenly stem and earthly branch assigned to a calendar year and read against the natal chart and active ten-year Luck Pillar. It shows which relationships, supports, tensions, combinations, or clashes receive extra emphasis that year. It does not, by itself, predict a specific event.
Definition
Liu Nian literally refers to the passing or circulating year. Every year contributes one of the 60 stem-branch combinations. The stem creates a visible Ten God relationship to the Day Master; the branch brings seasonal qi, hidden stems, and possible relationships with natal and Luck-Pillar branches.
The annual layer is the narrowest common timing frame in a BaZi reading. It is interpreted inside two larger frames: the natal chart, which supplies the base structure, and the active Luck Pillar, which supplies the decade-scale environment. Reading the year in isolation removes the context that gives it meaning.
Method, not mystique
Identify the Day Master, structure, support, Useful God method, and sensitive relationships in the original chart.
The ten-year stem and branch determine the current background before the one-year layer is judged.
Map its Ten Gods, hidden stems, combinations, clashes, and seasonal timing. Translate those relationships into themes and decision conditions, not guaranteed events.
If an annual stem represents Output and the active Luck Pillar supports that Output, the year may emphasize expression, production, teaching, or visible work. If the annual branch simultaneously clashes with a natal branch, the same year can also emphasize change or friction in the area represented by that pillar. The chart supports a conditional reading, not the statement that one named event must occur.
Do not confuse
A roughly ten-year background cycle. Annual Luck is the one-year layer operating inside it.
The year branch is only one component. BaZi also uses the annual stem and its relationships to all four natal pillars.
A responsible annual reading describes emphasized conditions and tradeoffs. It does not guarantee a concrete event.
Interpretive boundary
Annual Luck is not an annual horoscope based only on the birth animal. Exact pillars, calendar boundaries, the active Luck Pillar, and the whole natal chart matter. Pillarwise treats timing as a planning lens and never as medical, financial, legal, or safety certainty.
